HOMECOMING WEEK

COMMENTS:
Homecoming week is always fun. It creates many positive memories for students. It is also one of the more challenging weeks to academic progress. I encourage you to get into the spirit of homecoming, while making the best use of class time. It is an opportunity to model for students how to build school spirit and learn at the same time.

Some staff have asked about wearing spirit wear with jeans on Fridays. I am fine with that arrangement, provided one's appearance is still neat and professional. While I am not one who dresses up much for such events, I am fine with getting into the spirit of homecoming week. In other words, I don't plan to wear pajamas on Monday. Let me know if you have any questions on this.

The PBIS team will be presenting some ideas for student incentives at our next faculty meeting (Oct. 5). We are focusing on how to provide consistent expectations for students in order to create the best learning environment. Thank you to everyone who has been in the halls during passing times to provide for a positive atmosphere.

My Last Day

After 13 years as Ladysmith High School's principal, today is my last day. Tomorrow begins the first day of my retirement and a new chapter not only for myself, but also for my wife Rosanne and our son Bob and daughter Alyssa. I can not express the gratitude I have for all the students and staff that have studied or worked at LHS. The cooperation and respect shown to me throughout my tenure has always been positive and respectful. As with any worthy endeavor, there were many challenges, but also many successes. It must be noted that those successes were and are a direct result of the tireless work of so many individuals in this school. I shall miss working with so many consumate professionals for the benefit of so many worthy students. I wish everyone associated with LHS past, present, and future only the very best.

ANNOUNCEMENTS - September 30, 2011

General:
Attention students ordering a class ring: The Jostens class ring representative will be at school Tuesday, October 4th during the lunch hours in the high school cafeteria. Jerry will help you fill out your ring order form and answer any questions you may have. Please remember to bring your class ring order form and your $50 deposit.

The LHS Band is selling T-Shirts and Sweatshirts from now until October 4th. See Mr. Yudes or a Band student for details.

Anyone interested in helping backstage (building, painting, changing scenery) for the fall play, The Almost True Tale of Robin Hood, should sign up with Mr. Nova or Mrs. Lawrence. The first meeting will be held in the auditorium on Wednesday, October 6th at 3:45. If you are interested but cannot attend the first meeting, please let Mr. Nova or Mrs. Lawrence know.

A representative of Teen Court will be in the lunch room on Monday, Oct. 3rd, to share information on Teen Court in Rusk County. Students are welcome to visit the table for more information on this important service for teens.

Ladysmith High School is celebrating Homecoming week, October 3 thru October 7. Each day of the week will have a different dress up idea. Students and staff are encouraged to wear clothing for the theme of that day. Monday is pajama day, Tuesday camo/orange day, Wednesday occupation day, Thursday 70’s workout day and Friday is purple and gold day. Show your school spirit and dress up.

The Homecoming Dance will be on Friday, October 7 from 9-midnight in the LHS cafeteria following the football game. Admission is $7 and dress is semi-casual. If anyone is bringing a non-LHS student to the dance, you must sign him/her up in the library before the end of today.

Homecoming T-shirts are available for pick up in Student Services. Students may pick them up during study hall and lunch.

Athletics:
If you are a senior, have participated in at least one sport, and are a leader in both school and the community you are eligible to apply for the 2011 Wendy’s High School Heisman. Eligible seniors may pick up application information in Student Services. Application deadline is October 2.

Student Services:
The ASVAB test date for juniors has been changed to October 6th.

Juniors who wish to take the PSAT in October need to sign up in Student Services by October 4. Test date is Wednesday, October 12. The PSAT exam helps prepare for the SAT and is the entry for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Seniors who would like to apply for the $1000 Kohl Scholarship should pick up application information in Student Services. Applicants are evaluated on leadership, citizenship, school and community involvement, and academic achievement. The application deadline is November 11.

Engineering is an exciting career that combines technology with creativity using the basic tools of math and science. On this day, students will have the opportunity to learn more about engineering as a career, visit the engineering department and labs, tour the campus and ask questions of engineering students and staff. If you are interested in going, please see Mr. Jansen by September 30.

Each year high school students compete for more than $2.3 million in scholarships and incentives through the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Voice of Democracy Program. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military? Students in grades 9-12 may pick up an entry form in Student Services.

There will be a meeting for all members of the cast of the fall play today from 3:40 to 4:30 in the auditorium.

There will be a student council meeting on tomorrow morning at 7:45 in the library.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!

COMMENTS:
This past week, I had two opportunities to make it to my son’s school for after-school activities. Even though he is a teenage boy and doesn’t say much, I know it is important that I make these events and acknowledge his accomplishments. The same is true I am sure for the boys and girls at LHS. If you have the opportunity, check out students’ activities as the fall events wind down. Recall PBIS and STOIC, by concentrating your efforts into connecting with students. They deserve it.

Please note there will be a meeting for the principal’s advisory committee this Friday morning at 7:30 in the Library. We will discuss ideas for privileges and how to improve behavior. The PBIS committee will meet Monday of next week at 7:30 a.m., in the staff lounge. There will be a status breakfast at 7:15 in the Library on Friday next week. We are going a little earlier in order to acknowledge Bob King’s last day officially in the building. I hope everyone can stop by at least for a few minutes.

As I travel around to classrooms, I am impressed with the variety of activities taking place to assist student learning. Let me know if there is anything specifically you would like me to observe going on in your class. I enjoy when students show me what they are learning. Our goal should be students knowing and understanding more today than they did yesterday in each of our classes. Keep up the good work. - Bob Lecheler

Congratulations to the Trident swimming and diving team for their 103-67 victory over Tomahawk on Thursday evening. The ladies won 9 of 11 events and had several year and personal best swims. Next home meet is Oct. 6th.

Congratulations to the Varsity volleyball team for defeating Cumberland 3 sets to none last night. The JV team lost their match but played well to win the 3rd set. The C team lost their match but continues to improve.

Your last chance to sign up for the McDonald’s Youth Apprenticeship program is today. Interviews will be tomorrow beginning at 11:00 am. This is a great opportunity to earn high school credit while working a part time job. Sign up in Student Services by 3:30 today.

Congratulations to the Girls and Boys Cross Country runners at Tuesday’s large 3 division school Invitational held in Rice Lake. Leading the girl’s team was Freshman Abby Krisik with a time of 23:50 on a 5000 meter course. Olga Galina came in second and Katherine Kester came in third. Other runners for the Lumberjacks were Jessica Luckman, Tiffany Nelson, Makaila Wallin, and Brea Daggett.
Alissa Mohr and Rylie Dagget ran in the JV race. These young runners also ran the 5000 meter course.
The girl’s team placed 10th out 17 division 3 schools. Joel Wojtyna was the first Lumberjack to cross the finish line with his personal best time this year of 18:17 Great job Joel!Next in for the Jacks was Freshman Payden Long followed by Dan Beck, Erik Nelson, and Kyle Lobermeier. On a tough field with a small team the boys came in 16 th place overall. The whole team did a super job last night and Mrs. Olson wants to say well done Ladysmith runners.

Next week the Cross country team has two meets. One in North Western and one on Thurday in Holcombe. On Thur at the Holcombe Invitational Girls will race at 4:45 and boys 5K race will start at 5:15. If you would like to check out a XC race just drop on by. This meet will be held on the Holcombe school grounds. All or any fans or fan would be welcomed! Bring your Cow bells!

Volleyball C team players are reminded to be at the middle school at 5 for the game.

International Students Arriving Daily

The Ladysmith International Student Program appears to be thriving. Students from around the world have been arriving in Ladysmith to attend Ladysmith High School and the Ladysmith Health Care Academy since August 27. The final international students will arrive this week representing 12 countries from around the world. All international students build their personal course schedule with the help and guidance of our professionals in Student Services.

Many of our international students have expressed a desire to join our athletic teams as well as our large band program.As for course selections, math and science are very popular as well as English classes. We anticipate many of our Health Care Academy classes to be selected as well.

COMMENTS:

Thank you to everyone for your continued efforts for a smooth transition into the school year. I especially appreciate your patience with new students to get lockers open and find classes. However, they should be getting the routine down and should be getting to class on time. If you have students who are struggling to get to your class on time, let me know.

We have student and staff photos on Tuesday, the 13th. If you have any time in the morning and can help monitor students so they get to and from the auditorium in a timely manner, which would be appreciated. Be sure to get your photo taken before school that day.

I will be out of the office with Bob King on Wednesday for the Heart of the North principals meeting. MaryLou can get in touch with me through my cell phone.

I am planning on a fire drill on Thursday. Please review the procedures with students in each of your classes. It should take about two minutes to explain to each class your evacuation map. Be sure to have student rosters readily available to take roll once students are out of the building.

International student freshman Daun (Nikki) Kim, junior Erik Nelson, and seniors Nick Becker and Bethany Stoll were recently named Ladysmith High School’s students’ of the month for April. State HOSA competitions were held in Wisconsin Dells on Sunday and Monday. We had 23 competitors that represented Ladysmith Health Care Academy with excellence. Congratulations to all of our competitors for doing an outstanding job.

Two LHS students qualify for the FCCLA Nationals!

Ladysmith High School FCCLA Chapter has qualified for 2011 National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California July 10-14, 2011. Emily Nelson and Bethany Stoll first had to win at the local and state levels in order to qualify for the Nationals. Congratulations ladies!

Criteria:
Students competed in a Chapter Service Project Manual. The FCCLA chapter had to come up with a service project that proved to make a difference in their school. The members chose the Peer Buddy Program. This program was implemented at the end of the 2010 school year. This Peer Buddy Program is part of the Special Education Program at LHS. The Peer Buddy Program helps our students be more successful in and out of school. The manual had to have everything from a budget to monthly evaluation of student to student contact. This program is growing and will continue to be a part of the Ladysmith FCCLA Chapter.

University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Jazz Festival

The Ladysmith High School Jazz Ensemble traveled this past Saturday to Eau Claire to participate in the 2011 Eau Claire Jazz Festival. The group participated in the High School Big Band portion of the competition and came home with a second place finished in the Class D category (Schools with an enrollment of less than 400 students). The group performed the fiery Latin piece “Holy Habanero!” with soloists Junior Levi Strahm and senior Andrew Hetke receiving high praise from the judges. The group also performed classic Artie Shaw tune “Begin the Beguine” featuring senior Clarinetist Bethany Stoll as the featured soloist and senior tenor saxophonist Anna Ringstad on a brief solo as well. The group ended their performance with the high energy “Big Swing Face” featuring soloists Senior Kassie Krell on piano, Andrew Hetke on trombone and junior Jared McHugh on trumpet. The tune was a perfect ending to a great high energy performance from an outstanding jazz ensemble. This fine group of young men and women did an outstanding job of representing the community and school as well.

Members of the LHS Music Department participated in the annual District Solo & Ensemble Festival held on the UW-Barron County at Rice Lake, April 2nd. The weather was perfect and students performed exceptionally well. Of the thirty seven events that LHS Music Department students participated in, twenty-one received 1 or *1 ratings, fourteen received a 2 rating and two received a 3 rating. This exciting event will feature the LHS Jazz Ensemble performing a variety of jazz tunes from various genres while you get to enjoy a gourmet meal that includes chicken breast, ham, garlic mashed potatoes, tossed, salad, and cheese cake. A teacher must first nominate the student and provide the rationale for the nomination. Approval for each student nominee is determined by a vote of the faculty. Multi Cultural Day at the Elementary School

The following students participated in the multicultural day at LES on Wednesday, April 6th. The students presented information about their countries using powerpoint presentations, they did activities/projects with students, and taught them greetings in their native language. After the presentations the students all gathered in the gymnasium where they sang songs together. The day ended with a chicken stir fry and mini egg roll lunch. The staff and students had a wonderful day learning about the different cultures.

Seniors that signed the Wisconsin Covenant during your ninth grade year have until April 1 to turn in their paper work to be eligible for a grant offered through the program. If you have maintained a B average throughout your four years of high school, demonstrated good citizenship, participated in your community, completed the FAFSA, and applied to a Wisconsin College you are still eligible. Girls Volleyball open gym will be held each Sun. night from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Ladysmith Elementary School. All girls interested in playing are welcome to attend

The baseball informational meeting will be today Mon., March 21 and will take place in the cafeteria at 3:45 PM before baseball practice begins this evening. There will also be a baseball open gym from 6:30-8:00 PM on Sun., March 20.

Any girls who will be in grades 9 through 12, that would like to participate in summer volleyball league, beginning on Thurs., June 16, can sign up with Mrs. Peggar. You must pay $10.00 at the time you sign up. Come enjoy the fun! All girls welcome!

Girls Advance to Sectional Final

The Ladysmith Girls Basketball Team took one step closer to a trip to Madison by beating Amery last night at New Richmond in a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA)Sectional semi-final game 44-34. The freshmen loaded Jills pulled away from a strong Amery team led by their Division 1 recruit Kelly Stewart. The Jills take on the Altoona Rails Saturday night at Chippewa Falls in the Sectional Final to decide which team advances to the Girls' State Basketball Tournament next week in Madison. Congratulations & GOOD LUCK!!

Seniors, there is an additional local scholarship that has come in. It is open to a senior from Hawkins or has connections to relatives in Hawkins. Students Tap Maple Trees

For several years Mr. Bunton’s sophomore Biology classes have been tapping maple trees, collecting sap, and making maple syrup as a fun, enrichment activity. Students learn firsthand how water and sugars rise and lower through the tree vascular system during the day and how with a simple tap, this sap can be collected. Once enough sap is collected, it is boiled and reduced ultimately making maple syrup. A total of 40 liters of sap is needed to produce just one liter of syrup. On the last day of school, the Biology students are treated to a pancake breakfast complete with their own maple syrup!
