General:
The University of Minnesota-Duluth is having their annual Bulldog Engineering Day on October 29. Engineering is an exciting career that combines technology with creativity using the basic tools of math and science. On this day, students will have the opportunity to learn more about engineering as a career, visit the engineering department and labs, tour the campus and ask questions of engineering students and staff. If you are interested in going, please see Mr. Jansen by September 30.
Each year high school students compete for more than $2.3 million in scholarships and incentives through the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Voice of Democracy Program. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This year’s theme is Is There Pride in Serving in Our Military? Students in grades 9-12 may pick up an entry form in Student Services.
There will be a meeting for all members of the cast of the fall play Wednesday, Sept 28, from 3:40 to 4:30 in the auditorium.
There will be a student council meeting on Wednesday morning at 7:45 in the library.
The Homecoming Dance will be on Friday, October 7 from 9-midnight in the LHS cafeteria following the football game. Admission is $7 and dress is semi-casual. If anyone is bringing a non-LHS student to the dance, you must sign him/her up in the library by Friday, September 30.
Anyone who has signed up to be a Peer Buddy needs to attend the meeting Wednesday Sept. 28 at 7:30 in Room 711. If you cannot attend you need to see Mrs. Harelstad before Wednesday.
Athletics:
If you are a senior, have participated in at least one sport, and are a leader in both school and the community you are eligible to apply for the 2011 Wendy’s High School Heisman. Eligible seniors may pick up application information in Student Services. Application deadline is October 2.
Student Services:
An admissions counselor from the University of Wisconsin Madison will be at LHS on Wednesday, September 28 from 8:15 to 9:00 am. This is a great opportunity to have your questions answered regarding UW Madison or to learn more of what UW Madison has to offer. Students interested in meeting with the advisor need to secure a pass from Student Services prior to 1st hour Wednesday morning.
Youth Option applications are due this Friday, September 30. Drop your completed form off in Student Services.
Juniors who wish to take the PSAT in October need to sign up in Student Services by October 4. The PSAT exam helps prepare for the SAT and is the entry for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Seniors who would like to apply for the $1000 Kohl Scholarship should pick up application information in Student Services. Applicants are evaluated on leadership, citizenship, school and community involvement, and academic achievement. The application deadline is November 11.
State and national scholarships are available if you meet the criteria. Seniors are reminded to check the list posted on the Student Services window frequently.
