Music Department Update
One full week into second semester, students in the Folk Instrument class have already begun to play their guitars due to displaying a solid grasp on reading music. The students are currently learning to play "Ode to Joy" with hopefully a performance date of Friday during class.
In Concert Band, senior Bethany Stoll just returned from her fourth year of participation in the National Band Association-Wisconsin Chapter All State Band. The group performed an excellent selection of songs and even debuted a new selection under the direction of current Iowa Director of Bands and former UW-Eau Claire Director of Bands Mark Heidel. Students are currently working on songs for the All Schools and Spring Concerts as well as starting to choose Solo & Ensemble Music. The LHS Jazz Ensemble is going at full force preparing for their over night trip to UWEC to perform at the Eau Claire Jazz festival as well as the annual Jazz Dinner Concert.
Students in our Broadcasting, Engineering and Stage Technolgy (B.E.S.T.)class are busy utilizing a new additional computer/mixing station. Our students have been successful mixing music and making commercials. So far, student have completed and sold two commercials for local businesses that can be heard on radio station WLDY/WJBL. This class will also be finishing a commercial for the Health Care Academy of Ladysmith within the next couple weeks!

Business Education Students Earn College Credit
Congratulations to the following students who earned transcripted credits in the Business Ed. Department for classes taken and they earned the grades required by WITC. Students earn both LHS credit and WITC credit for these classes. Students can earn up to 19 credits from the Business Ed. Department for WITC; these credits are accepted by all 4 WITC Campuses: Rice Lake, Ashland, New Richmond, and Superior. Some 4 year colleges accept these credits as well. This is an excellent way for a family to save money on college tuition for their son or daughter.
In Microcomputer Applications which include (MS Word A) (MS Excel A) and (MS Power Point) a total of 3 credits were earned for Ashley Diamico, Dmytro Lokot, and Lacey Schneiderwent.
In Financial Accounting 4 credits were by Lacey Schneiderwent, Jay Slagoski, and Brittany Stonkey. Congratulations!

Social Studies Update
Students in Ms Rabas' U.S. History class participated in a simulation of immigrant arrivals at Ellis Island. First students needed to make a passport. For this, they used the Ellis Island website to search records for any ancestors. Here, they used actual ship manifest records to complete their passport. Once students had a passport, they were ready to pass through the various processing stations at Ellis Island. This simulation reflected actual tests that immigrants were required to pass before gaining entry to the United States: the “great stairs” test, the medical inspection, the mental inspection, and legal inspection. Those who did not pass the medical inspection were detained in the Ellis Island hospital until they recovered or were deported for an incurable and contagious disease.
In Issues in History, Ms. Rabas classes had a part of an unit on terrorism. Students researched the use of chemical weapons from world history. They had to report on a specific chemical weapon, why it poses such a threat to us today, and where and when it was used in the past. Megan Gorsenger created a picture montage on nitrogen mustard gas.
In Sociology students played a modified version of Monopoly to reflect the different social classes in the U.S. The game illustrated the impact of having a lack of resources and the many barriers to upward mobility. To illustrate social class privilege, students participated in an activity where they had to protect their “baby egg”. Students were broken into high, middle and low income groups and were given an egg. Students had to use their money to buy items to protect their “baby egg”. Items included things like bubble wrap, string, paper towel, etc. Once this was complete students had to stand on a chair and drop their “baby egg”. Only those who were part of the upper class had enough resources to protect their egg from the fall, while the other eggs all cracked. The activity illustrated that those in the higher class have greater resources to provide for their family, such as adequete housing, healthcare, daycare, nutrition, etc.
In addition, as part of a unit on culture students researched a present or historic counterculture of their choice. Students were responsible for identifying the traditions and customs, norms and values, stereotypes, argot, and the similar characteristics of the mainstream culture they rebelled against. Projects by Sigrid Stensvold and Alicia Torres Porras were very good.

Nordic Ski Team Update
The LHS Nordic Ski Team consists of an International Cast. 17 athletes total representing the USA, Korea, Mexico, and Norway are on our team. International students are: Marianna Morales Rodriguez, Alicia Torres Porras, Natalia Cobos Guasch,
Martin Boye, Yoon-gi Koo, Hye-jeong Yang, and Jinan Lee.
So far we have had pretty poor luck attending competitions due to poor weather conditions and cancellations. However, we are going to be in Hayward for the next two Tuesdays for meets. Other meets are scheduled for the later part of January and the first couple of weeks in February. In addition, 10 members of the team are
preparing for the 23km Kortelopet ski race during the International American Birkebeiner Race on February 26th (more info at birkie.com). Athletes are coached by Matt Bunton, and Brian Groothousen, as well as other volunteers from the Ladysmith Area Trails Association. The team will also be having a number of team dinners on the days prior to the competitions.
Students practice 4 to 5 nights per week after school either at the high
school lighted loop or other area trail systems. Many of the students have
never skied before this winter and have made tremendous gains in terms of
technique and stamina. Considering that this is our first year, we are
really progressing incredibly well.
Advanced Chemistry Class
Jiajun Li (Tony) an international student from China presented a 10 min long speech on Genetics in the field of Biochemistry just yesterday. It was extremely well prepared, funny, and very educational. The students in class were drawn in by a fantastic introduction and were kept interested the entire time by his sense of humor. Jiajun's knowledge base on the subject was impressive which made for a fantastic speech.
The rest of the students in Advanced Chemistry will be giving their speeches during class until the end of the semester.

Blood Drive a Success
The Ladysmith High School Student Council sponsored a Red Cross Blood Drive yesterday in the LHS gymnasium. Students, staff, and community volunteers gave over 40 units of blood. Congratulations students and staff.
Business Education Classes
As first semester ends, here are some of the business class activities. In Financial Accounting, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College made a simulation to use and the students have been working on it in class the last couple of weeks. They actually like doing it! Students that have had a hard time on tests, are able to apply what they know and it is rewarding to see them excited about the class! Students have asked if they could do these simulations all year! The simulations are like working on a job as an accountant as it takes them through the whole first cycle of accounting.
In Introduction to Business students are working on checking account simulations that Ladysmith Federal Savings and Loan has purchased for us. Some students really struggled at first with the reconciliation process, but after they practiced more--they completed the rest of them easily; now most students are finished with the assignments!

Ladysmith Dance Team
The 2010 Ladysmith Dance Team has ten hard working young ladies. We have
two new freshmen dancers, Brooke Potter and Shianne Larsen joining the team
this year... They are working hard to learn new and complicated steps and
routines. Other new faces this year are Jessica Luckman, Hyun-jin (Jin) Kim an exchange student from Korea, and Olga Galina. All three are doing a
wonderful job and putting in a lot of time at practices. Return dancers are
Emily Grotzinger, Hannah Douglass, Sarah McGinn, Kara Stushek, and Mckenzie
Anderson. These ladies our the core of the team and just get better every
year.
The team's first routine is a great performance using poms titled “Tik Tok”. It
has spins leaps and our dance teams first double turn. It’s got a great
melody and just a touch of hip hop to make it fun. Next on the list is a
Salsa dance with great Latin moves and rhythm. The name of this routine is
“Fire”. It is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Our third and by far hardest
routine is a hip hop dance titled “Freak”. It’s the most challenging
dance of the season the last two dances will be Lyrical and the end of
season dance is team’s choice. The Ladysmith Dance Team performs at
Wrestling, and Boys and Girls Basketball each month. The team practices every night form 3:30-5:30 Mon-Thur and then every Sunday 6:30 to 8:30.
