ANNOUNCEMENTS
March 18, 2011

General:

Girls Volleyball open gym will be held each Sun. night from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Ladysmith Elementary School. All girls interested in playing are welcome to attend!

PM detention today Fri., March 18, will be in Mrs. Diamond’s room, number 401.

Please place blue recycling containers in the hallway to be emptied at this time. Thank you.

The baseball informational meeting will be on Mon., March 21 and will take place in the cafeteria at 3:45 PM before baseball practice begins that evening. There will also be a baseball open gym from 6:30-8:00 PM on Sun., March 20.

Any girls who will be in grades 9 through 12, that would like to participate in summer volleyball league, beginning on Thurs., June 16, can sign up with Mrs. Peggar. You must pay $10.00 at the time you sign up. Come enjoy the fun! All girls welcome!

Girls interested in playing Softball this Spring should sign-up in the Library today, Fri. March 18. There will also be a short Softball Meeting at 3:35 PM in the cafeteria today Fri. March 18.

All members of the Dance Team make sure all your uniforms have been turned in and checked off by the end of school today..

Student Services:
Seniors, there is an additional local scholarship that has come in. It is open to a senior from Hawkins or has connections to relatives in Hawkins. You must have good grades, really want to go to school and has a financial need, gets along and is helpful to others. Deadline is today Fri., March 18.

Students interested in the medical field may apply for a summer program that focuses on cardiac health. The camp is located in Chicago or Milwaukee and runs for one week at a time. See Student Services for more information.

Looking for summer work? Ross’s Teal Lake Lodge & Golf Club and Crex Meadows Youth Conservation Camp have summer openings. See Student Services for more details!

There will be a senior meeting in the auditorium Wed., March 23 during Activity Period.

UW Barron County will be holding campus tours on Tues., April 5 beginning at 6:15 PM. For those interested, it is a time for both you and your parents to meet faculty and staff, while learning more about academic programs. No need to miss school so check this out.

Some events for the day include the Pancake Eating Contest, Class Relay Race, Best Dressed Lumberjack and Lumberjill, Dodge-ball, Volleyball, Bingo, Poker, Foose Ball, Hacky Sac, Chess, and Checkers. Sign-up sheets are posted on the Student Council Bulletin Board by the library.

Students participating in the Medical Discovery Days are reminded to dress professionally today. Please wear khaki or black pants and your Medical Discovery Days T-Shirt. Students should also wear comfortable shoes for walking and eat a good breakfast.

General:

ATTENTION SPANISH STUDENTS:
There will be a review session today. Spanish 2, your session will be today at 3:35 PM.

This is a reminder for students participating in “The Price of Life” next Tues., Feb. 22. You need to complete your pre-arranged form and turn it in. The financial literacy event will be third and fourth hour in the LHS auditorium with students from Flambeau and Bruce schools.

Softball girls interested in attending a one day softball clinic at UW Stout on Sun. March 6, can pick up clinic information in the office this week. Forms must be in by Feb. 28.

Anyone interested in being in a commercial for the B.E.S.T. Program please see Mr. Yudes as soon as possible.

Student Services

More scholarships have been listed and deadlines are coming up for many of these scholarships. You need to keep checking the Student Services Bulletin Board and stop into Student Services for more information.

Seniors – remember there is another opportunity for help on the FAFSA, Financial Aid Packet, at WITC this Saturday, Feb. 19.

Students remember the deadline for Youth Options is March 1.

Seniors this is a reminder that local scholarships are open and due on March 10. This is a great opportunity to get financial assistance towards your college education. Stop by student services to get help and application material. Remember recommendations are required for many of the scholarships so make sure you are providing them with plenty of time to get the necessary forms completed.

General:

The Bear Club is looking for your used printer cartridges and unwanted cell phones. These items can be taken to Mr. Bunton’s room.

Seniors interested in the NUE Outstanding student scholarship should see Mr. Jansen to get the appropriate form and information. This scholarship needs to be completed today.

There will be a Student Council Meeting tomorrow at 7:45 AM in the Library to discuss Lumberjack Day.

ANNOUNCEMENTS – MONDAY, MARCH 15

GIRL'S VOLLEYBALL OPEN GYM is held each Sunday evening from 4 to 6 pm at the elementary school. Any girl's interested in playing volleyball are welcome. You do NOT have to be on a high school team in order to participate. Come and join the fun!

ACT STUDY SESSIONS: There will be a Science ACT Test Prep on March 17 during periods 7 & 8. The English ACT Test Prep will be on March 31 during periods 1 & 2. The Math ACT Test Prep will be on April 8 during periods 6 & 7. Stop in at Student Services to pick-up your ACT Test Prep packet.

THE KIWANIS SENIOR BANQUET is April 14. All seniors are invited to attend. Seniors are to sign up in the library by April 7.

THERE IS A BASEBALL MEETING IN THE CAFETERIA at 4:00pm today.

STUDENT COUNCIL will meet on Thursday, March 18 at 7:45 a.m. in the library.

The Lumberjack Boys' Basketball team closed out their fine season with a loss in the state sectionals to Thorp in overtime. Nice season Jacks!

GIRL'S VOLLEYBALL OPEN GYM is held each Sunday evening from 4 to 6 pm at the elementary school. Any girl's interested in playing volleyball are welcome. You do NOT have to be on a high school team in order to participate. Come and join the fun!

KEVIN FALKENBERG, ADMISSIONS REP, FROM UW BARRON COUNTY and TOMMY BENNETT, ADMISSIONS REP FROM VERMILION COMMUNITY COLLEGE will be here today during period 5. Be sure to stop by their displays during lunch and discover what UW Barron County and Vermilion Community College have to offer.

DOODLE 4 GOOGLE CONTEST: If any student would like to send in an entry for the Doodle 4 Google contest, our school has registered and can send in 6 designs. Please follow the guidelines on the Google website and then bring your finished design to Mrs. Bricco by Friday March 5th.

SENIORS NEED TO TURN IN THEIR SENIOR SURVEY SHEET to Mr. Wagenaar by this Friday. If you need one, stop by Mr. Wagenaar’s room and pick one up.

NATIONAL FINANCIAL CAPABILITY CHALLENGE: Students who have had Personal Finance before are eligible to take the National Financial Capability Challenge; the Challenge was not available last year; however, the year before students did well and received personalized certificates. Students are also eligible to earn a medal for doing extremely well. If you are interested in taking this online exam, please stop in and sign up with Mrs. Titera this week.

ATTENTION HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL PLAYERS: There will be open gym this Sunday and the two following Sundays from 1-2pm. Also, UW Stout is putting on a softball clinic on March 7th. Interested players may pick up forms in the library this week.

QUESTBRIDGE COLLEGE PREP SCHOLARSHIP: If you are a high school junior who has a strong academic record and an annual household income of less than $60,000 you are eligible to apply for the QuestBridge College Prep Scholarship to compete for admission to top-ranked colleges. The College Prep Scholarship awards selected students with full scholarships to college summer programs, an all expense paid campus visit, and an invitation to QuestBridge College Admissions Conferences at Stanford and Yale. Applications are available in Student Services.

ATTENTION SENIORS : According to the criteria for the Fogarty Scholarship, your letters of recommendation can not be written by anyone currently employed by the school district.

SENIORS: your transcripts are ready and may be picked up in Student Services.

Friday, March 5 is Lumberjack Day. See the bulletin board outside of the library for the sign-up sheets for the games, competitions, and activities. Get your teams together.

ANNOUNCEMENTS – TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2

ONE-ON-ONE FINANCIAL AID ADVISING SESSIONS are available on Wednesday, February 17; 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sign up in Student Services.

FIRST SEMESTER COLLEGE SUCCESS STUDENTS should pick up their journals in Student Services.

SENIORS INTERESTED IN THE NUE OUTSTANDING STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP should see Mr. Jansen to get the appropriate form and information. This scholarship needs to be completed by Monday, February 15.

ANY JUNIOR interested in attending the county government day event on Feb 23 should see Mr. Novakofski before Friday, Feb 5.

HAITI FUNDRAISER: The LHS Student Council, Heart of the North, Mr. Novakofski and Miss Rabas are sponsoring a fundraiser for the people of Haiti. The global study classes are selling Hearts for Haiti. There are jars in the library and office for students and staff to contribute to the relief fund. The week of February 8-12 Student Council will be selling Mrs. Brown’s famous sugar cookies during lunch.

BASEBALL SIGN UP is in the library this week. Boys interested in playing baseball this spring should sign up by this Friday.

GIRLS SOFTBALL SIGN UP is in the library. Girls interested in playing softball this spring should sign up by February 12. Open gym for softball begins Sunday, February 14 from 1-2:00 p.m. for five weeks.

SENIORS: It's time to take care of your pre-arranged forms for the Reality Academy. Please pick one up from Mrs. Kuehn. She will be in the cafeteria before school all week or you can go to her classroom in building 7 to pick up and return your pre-arranged absence form for periods 3-5 on February 10.

BINGO : Have you volunteered yet? Thank you to those who have taken the time to help others. There are 4 opportunities left to help with bingo at the Ladysmith Nursing Home this school year. See the blue sheets posted around the building for dates and Mrs. Kuehn for pre-arranged forms.

JUNIORS: There will be a Junior Prom meeting at 7:40 Wednesday morning in Mr. Groothousen’s room. We will be making decisions regarding prom decorations. Don’t be late!

VOLLEYBALL: There will be a short meeting on Thurs., Feb. 4th at 8:00 am in the library for any girls interested in playing Volleyball this summer and/or in the fall. Please see Coach Peggar if you can not attend.

INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN PHARMACY? High school juniors and seniors are invited to learn about the Bachelor of Science in Pharmacology & Toxicology and the Doctor of Pharmacy programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy. Demonstrations, lectures, tours and more as participants interact with current students, faculty and pharmacists. Explore your options at: Discovery Day, Saturday, March 13.
